How I Approach Teaching and Learning

My work with educators, organizations, and communities is grounded in the belief that effective teaching is shaped by historical understanding, thoughtful practice, and a strong sense of belonging. Drawing on my background as an education historian and teacher educator, I help partners better understand how the past informs present-day learning environments—and how that understanding can strengthen teaching, leadership, and program design.

My approach emphasizes fairness, access, and dignity in learning spaces, supporting educators in creating environments where students feel seen, valued, and engaged.

Areas of Teaching & Practice

I bring both classroom experience and research-based insight to my consulting work, with expertise in:

  • Teaching in the U.S. Context
Supporting educators in understanding how cultural, historical, and institutional contexts shape teaching and learning, and how these factors influence student experience.
  • Educational History as Practice
Helping educators use the history of schooling as a practical tool for reflection, curriculum design, and professional growth—not simply background knowledge.
  • Oral History Methods
Introducing oral history as a way to center voice, lived experience, and community knowledge in educational settings.
  • Student Belonging
Assisting schools and organizations in developing practices that strengthen connection, trust, and participation across diverse learning environments.

Workshops, Trainings, and Professional Learning

I design and facilitate custom workshops and trainings for educators, school leaders, and organizations. These sessions are collaborative, reflective, and practice-oriented, and may include:

  • Using educational history to inform contemporary teaching challenges
  • Strengthening student belonging through historically responsive approaches
  • Integrating oral history and community narratives into curriculum and programs
  • Supporting educators in reflective practice and professional growth

Each engagement is tailored to the goals, context, and needs of the organization.

What Guides My Work

Across all consulting and teaching engagements, my work is guided by:

  • Historically informed practice
  • Student-centered and context-aware approaches
  • Asset-based perspectives on learners and communities
  • A commitment to belonging, care, and meaningful access to learning
