Youth need space to experiment safely—intellectually, socially, and creatively—as part of healthy development.
When young people are supported to take age-appropriate risks, test ideas, ask difficult questions, and learn from missteps, they build confidence, critical thinking skills, and a stronger sense of agency. Safe experimentation happens in environments where caring adults set clear boundaries, model ethical decision-making, and respond with guidance rather than punishment.
We know that youth thrive when they have access to caring, consistent adults beyond the school day who know them, listen to them, and believe in their potential. Out-of-school relationships—with mentors, program leaders, coaches, and community educators—provide young people with additional spaces to be seen and supported as whole individuals.
